Who we are

This website, houseofrhodri.com, is run by David Edwards, who is responsible for your personal information (the “data controller”). The server is administered on his behalf by Morne, the project’s server administrator.

You can contact us about anything in this notice at contact@houseofrhodri.com.

When you visit the website

Like almost every website, our web server keeps a log of requests. For each page or file requested, the log records:

  • your IP address;
  • the date and time;
  • the page or file requested, and whether it was served successfully;
  • the page that linked you to us, if your browser sends it;
  • your browser’s identification string (for example, its name and version).

We use these logs only to keep the website secure and working, for example to spot attacks and fix errors. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure website. We do not use them to identify or profile visitors, and we do not share them.

The web server deletes its logs after 14 days. Our network gateway, which passes traffic to the web server, also records IP addresses and keeps them for 30 days. Backups of the server are kept for one week and then overwritten, so no log information is kept for more than about 30 days in all.

Cookies, analytics and third parties

This website sets no cookies for visitors and uses no analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind. Everything on the site, including its fonts, is served from our own server, so your browser does not contact any other company when you visit.

Some pages include YouTube videos. These are not loaded until you press play: until then, nothing is sent to YouTube or Google. When you press play, the video loads from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced service (youtube-nocookie.com). From that point YouTube, which is owned by Google, receives your IP address and may store information in your browser, under Google’s privacy policy. If you’d rather not, each video also has a link to watch it on YouTube instead.

The only cookie is a sign-in cookie for the site’s editors. It is set only on the editing area’s own pages (under /admin), never on the public pages, is used only to keep an editor signed in, and is deleted when they sign out or close the browser. Because it is strictly necessary for that purpose, it doesn’t need consent.

Links to other websites, such as the Dictionary of Welsh Biography, take you to sites with their own privacy policies.

If you email us

If you write to contact@houseofrhodri.com, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you choose to tell us. We use this only to reply to you and deal with your message: for example a correction, a story or photograph you send us, or a request for access to the family archive. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us.

We keep emails for as long as we need them to deal with your message, and review them at least once a year, deleting those we no longer need. We do not share your email or add you to any mailing list.

Information about living people

This website never publishes information about living people. Family information about living relatives is kept only in the members’ archive, which is not public. If you believe something on this website is about you or a living relative, please tell us and we will remove it.

The members’ archive

The family archive at tree.houseofrhodri.com is a separate system with its own sign-in, for family members only. This notice covers the public website. If you have a question about information held in the archive, contact us at the same address.

Where your information is kept

Our web server and our mail server are both on our own network in South Africa, so the server logs and emails described above are stored and processed there. We do not use outside email or hosting companies. Your information is protected under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and, where it applies, the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct information that is wrong;
  • ask us to delete your information;
  • object to our using your information, or ask us to restrict how we use it.

To use any of these rights, email contact@houseofrhodri.com. We will reply within one month. Because server logs record only IP addresses, we may need you to tell us your IP address and the date of your visit to find any log entries about you.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to a regulator: in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office; in South Africa, the Information Regulator.

Changes to this notice

If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this notice and the date at the top of the page.
